MAESD–issued Certificate of Qualification holders
This section contains information for individuals who hold a Certificate of Qualification in the Sprinkler and Fire Protection Installer trade issued by the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development (MAESD) prior to April 8, 2013. For more information on how the trade’s reclassification specifically affects you and what action you need to take to make sure you meet all of the changing requirements please read below.
What does this change mean for me?
As a holder of a Certificate of Qualification issued by MAESD in the Sprinkler and Fire Protection Installer Trade, on February 2, 2017, you will be required to become a member of the Journeypersons Class of the College and hold a College-issued Certificate of Qualification in order to continue to work legally in the trade. This means membership in the College will no longer be voluntary after February 2, 2017 and your MAESD-issued Certificate of Qualification will cease to be valid.
Your membership will have to be maintained “in good standing” which includes paying an annual membership fee ($120+HST). Please see the Classes of Members & Fees section of the College’s website for all fee-related information.
2-year implementation period (February 2, 2015 – February 2, 2017)
Because you hold an MAESD-issued Certificate of Qualification in the trade, you are eligible to apply directly for membership in the Journeypersons Class of the College. Remember, you will have to be a member of the Journeypersons Class and hold a College-issued Certificate of Qualification in the Sprinkler and Fire Protection Installer trade by February 2, 2017.

What do I need to do?
The first step to becoming a member of the College’s Journeypersons Class is to contact the College and complete a Member Application Form. To obtain a Membership Application Form and Membership Application Guide for Non-Apprentices, please visit the Guides and Forms section of the College’s website.
We recommend submitting your application at the earliest opportunity to ensure adequate time for processing and to ensure that you are a member of the College when the trade becomes compulsory on February 2, 2017.
Once your Member Application Form has been received, your eligibility confirmed, and your membership fee for the Journeypersons Class has been received, you will receive your College-issued Certificate of Qualification and your information will appear on the College’s Public Register.

I have a Certificate of Qualification issued by MAESD prior to April 8, 2013 in the Sprinkler and Fire Protection Installer trade. Will this still allow me to work legally when the reclassification takes effect?
No. Certificates of Qualification issued in the Sprinkler and Fire Protection Installer trade by MAESD prior to April 8, 2013 will no longer be valid at the end of the two-year implementation period. To continue to practise legally, you will have to become a member of the College in the Journeypersons Class and hold a College-issued Certificate of Qualification by February 2, 2017.
-
Will I receive a Red Seal on my College-issued Certificate of Qualification if I had the endorsement on my MAESD-issued Certificate of Qualification?
Yes. If you have a Red Seal endorsement on your MAESD-issued Certificate of Qualification, the Certificate of Qualification issued by the College will also have the Red Seal endorsement.
-
Will membership in the College still be voluntary for the Sprinkler and Fire Protection Installer trade when the reclassification takes effect?
No. On February 2, 2017, the Sprinkler and Fire Protection Installer trade will be compulsory. When that happens, you will need to be a member of the College and hold a valid Certificate of Qualification in order to continue to work legally in that trade.
-
What if I decide not to join the College when the trade is reclassified?
As of February 2, 2017, if you have decided not to join the College in the Sprinkler and Fire Protection Installer trade, you will no longer be legally permitted to do the work of that trade. To do so would be a ticketable offence under the Ontario College of Trades and Apprenticeship Act, 2009. For more information, please see the Complaints & Discipline section of the College’s website.
