December 1, 2017 – 2347478 o/a Middleport Mechanical

Charges: Part III Provincial Offences Act summons for an offence under the Ontario College of Trades and Apprenticeship Act, 2009, sec. 4 – employing or otherwise engaging individual to engage in compulsory trade without a Certificate of Qualification (two counts).

Summary: On October 12, 2016, Ontario College of Trades inspectors conducted an inspection at 7040 County Road 9, Clearview, ON; a new construction site for a commercial building. The inspectors determined that an individual employed or otherwise engaged by 2347478 o/a Middleport Mechanical was installing hangers supporting the sheet metal and installing pipe for the boiler system and pneumatic air system while he did not hold a Certificate of Qualification or a Statement of Membership in the compulsory trade of sheet metal worker (308A) and steamfitter (307A) that is not suspended, and while he was not an apprentice in those trades working pursuant to a registered training agreement that is not suspended.

On December 1, 2017, 2347478 o/a Middleport Mechanical was convicted of the charges in a Barrie court and ordered to pay a fine of $3500 plus a $875 victim fine surcharge. In addition, the court issued a two-year probation order for 2347478 o/a Middleport Mechanical.

The Ontario College of Trades is winding down as the government takes action to modernize the skilled trades and apprenticeship system.
